About the Generation

Introduced in 2009, Generation by Knoll was designed by New Zealand-based Formway Design around the concept of “elastic design.” Rather than assuming there is one correct way to sit, Generation was engineered to support the constant shifts, twists, reaches, and posture changes that happen throughout a normal workday. Its distinctive Flex Back combines an elastomer net with a figure-eight structure, allowing the chair to flex in multiple directions while maintaining support. Generation became one of Knoll’s signature ergonomic task chairs and helped establish a broader family of movement-focused seating.

What to Look For

Inspect the Flex Back material carefully for cuts, stretching, or damage. Test the recline, seat-depth adjustment, arms, and lumbar support if equipped. Because Generation chairs are often heavily used in commercial offices, check the seat fabric and arm pads for wear as well.
