About the Freedom

Designed by Niels Diffrient, the Freedom Chair is one of Humanscale’s most recognizable products and a defining example of the brand’s minimalist approach to ergonomics. Rather than relying on numerous levers and controls, Freedom uses a weight-sensitive recline system that automatically adjusts to the user as they move. Its sculpted cushions, articulating backrest, and optional headrest are designed to provide continuous support while encouraging natural posture changes throughout the day. The result is a chair that feels refined, intuitive, and distinctly different from more mechanically adjustable ergonomic seating.

What to Look For

Test the automatic recline to make sure it moves smoothly and provides consistent resistance. Check that the arms raise and lower together properly, inspect the upholstery for excessive wear, and test the seat-depth adjustment. On headrest models, make sure the headrest moves freely and stays in position. Also inspect the aluminum frame and base for scratches or structural damage.
